Presence vs. Positioning Use-cases

What is Presence?

Presence enables the discovery of a Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) device within a coverage zone.

Fathom™ can provide valuable insight into the number of visitors to a venue, how visits last, and if visitors return within a particular time period.

Presence is defined by a proximity coverage area that enables the observation of the ingress or egress of BLE devices. You can have multiple Presence zones that represent the physical layout of a venue. Depending on the size of and physical limitations presented in the zone, each zone can be administered by 1 or more Fathom™ Hubs. 


Use case: A Major Metropolitan Tourism Association

About: Client's mission is to attract more visitors, get them to stay longer, spend more and say wonderful things about the destination both during and after their visit.

Challenge: Despite its mission, the client is challenged to scale the gathering of visitors data across now 1000+ members in the tourism association. Understanding higher value questions, such as the likelihood of a visitor at one venue making repeat visit or visit at one or more other venues and length of stay, led to no easy answers. 

Why us: With Fathom's Presence capability, the client deploys one or more hubs depending on the size of venue across multiple locations. Fathom is able to observe event data triggered by the movement of BLE devices in and out of coverage zones and analyze that data for insights such as total visits, correlated visits, dwell time and device type. 


What is Positioning?

Positioning makes it possible to accurately locate and analyze beacons and/or BLE devices in a coverage area. For devices the are static such as beacons that you do not expect to move around, the Fathom™ Hub acts as a beacon management system by creating a network layer that enables beacons to be located, positioned and monitored. Positioning can also apply to dynamic devices, ones that are attached to assets or people that move around a coverage area. Fathom provides the same ability to monitor BLE devices in dynamic mode, but generates highly accurate location data that shows the path of movement in real-time. 


Use case: A North American Transit System

About: A US Transit Authority that provides high quality transit service generating 3.5 Million passenger trips annually.

Challenge: The client manually maintains an inventory management procedure for its 60+ buses. Staff are charged with identifying and locating buses in a large (30,000 square foot) indoor depot. The inventory management process is currently a paper-based system and requires visual verification to accurately place buses in the appropriate row and position within that row. This manual process of tracking bus location slows down operational efficiency and makes it difficult to deploy buses in the correct order for the next day of service. 

Why us: Fathom deploys a network of Fathom Hubs to locate and position the buses in the indoor facility. This is achieved with a mix of Fathom™ Tags, our powerful smart beacons installed on the transit buses as well as legacy beacon technology already in use on the buses. Fathom is able to accurately track the positions of the buses as they come into the coverage area in both static and dynamic scenarios. Client is able to eliminate human errors and effectively automate what was previously a costly and manual operation.
